Knowing what type of oil your vehicle takes is almost as important as knowing when to have the oil changed. There are two major oil types: synthetic vs. conventional oil. Both oils differ greatly in what they offer to your vehicle as well as how long they last.

At Norm Reeves Honda Superstore Vista, we’re going to delve in and explore conventional and synthetic oil, so drivers like you in Vista, Escondido, and Carlsbad can learn more about how they differ and which one is best suited for your vehicle.

What Is Synthetic Oil?

Synthetic oil is technically real oil—it just has synthetic particles added to it. It’s a chemical process where the impurities are taken out of crude oil and the oil is then refined. It has a higher viscosity level than conventional oil, which gives it a stronger heat resistance and a prolonged performance. The synthetic aspect of the oil is the added-in components, which work to boost engine cleaning and protection. Most vehicles made after 2008 take synthetic oil.

What Is Conventional Oil?

Conventional oil has been the go-to engine lubricant for generations, even since the earliest automobiles. It’s the oil that’s extracted right from the ground. While it does go through a bit of a purification process, it’s not nearly as lengthy or intense as the synthetic process. Typically, this type of oil is meant for vehicles manufactured before 2008.

Synthetic vs Conventional Oil: When to Change?

While each of these oils can provide the function of keeping your engine parts clean, cool, and well-lubricated, there’s quite a difference between how long they last and when you’ll need to have them changed.

Conventional oil typically lasts between 3,000 and 5,000 miles. It’s effective at performing its functions, but due to its low viscosity and a less intense purification process, it breaks down and it begins to show with the vehicle’s performance.

Synthetic oil, on the other hand, is meant to last you a while. Typically, you’ll want to schedule a synthetic oil change around 5,000 to 7,000 miles, but sometimes vehicles can go up to 10,000 miles before needing the synthetic oil changed. Due to the higher viscosity, this oil can withstand the heat and keep your parts clean, cool, and lubricated for longer.

Which Oil Is Best for My Vehicle?

If your vehicle is newer than 2008, you’ll want to have synthetic oil in your engine. However, they also offer synthetic blends for your vehicle that are cost efficient and can still last longer than conventional oil. However, the benefit of using full synthetic oil in your car is the less frequent oil changes than you’d have if you used conventional oil in your vehicle.
